Throughout my journey in America as a first-generation immigrant, I have benefited from the help of many people. One particularly powerful mentor was my undergrad advisor at UC Berkeley who encouraged me to give as I receive. Inspired by her advice, I got involved in helping underserved communities through Cal Academic Achievement Programs’ educational workshops and mentorship programs. This involvement connected me to other non-profit Pan-Asian organizations for students and business professionals, and later with the Monte Jade Mentorship Program, which both focused on helping early to mid-career Asian professionals. These organizations were especially close to my heart as I saw so much of myself in these kids and they reminded me of my own journey. One student, Jason, who I met through my work at the mentorship program, had also emigrated to the US with almost nothing, overcoming many obstacles and pulling himself up by sheer willpower. He reminded me of myself, and I helped him to identify academic goals and ultimately land a consulting job. I found working with kids like Jason to be enormously rewarding and I am committed to continuing mentoring others throughout my MBA journey and career.
