I’m a serial entrepreneur currently building Higher Rewards, a fintech startup aimed at financially empowering non-profit and faith-based organizations. I was approached by a data scientist that wanted to join the team. My gut reaction was “no”, primarily because I believed there wasn’t a role for him given that we hadn’t run our pilot program yet and lacked meaningful data. Yet, as I listened to him describe his talents, it quickly became apparent that he could add substantially to the company’s progress, even in its nascency. Within a matter of weeks, we were able to better define our KPIs, leading to a successful launch of our pilot program. We ultimately refined our strategic direction based on his ongoing analyses.
Inspired by my education at Haas, I learned to never close the door immediately. Even when something doesn’t “appear” to be a good fit, always search for the opportunity to collaborate beyond what is obvious. Thanks to our newly hired data scientist and our culture of openness and collaboration, we’re on a fast track to fulfilling our mission of “empowering those who empower others.”
